lyrics

Early Sunday morning before the rosy light
Women steamed rosemary and ground up thyme
When they prepared the spices
They walked under the moon
Talkin’ about a man who now lay in a tomb
Then golden-haired lads in lightning robes of light
Floated in the misty path like phantoms from the night
They said to Mary Magdelene, “Woman, lift your head!
Why do you look for the living among the dead?”

Homeless Jim screams again, the wind howls in reply
Delivery trucks, migrating ducks and drunks keep squawking by
And men of ill-repute and men of high-degree
Supposedly are looking out for folks like you and me
But just when you get comfortable, they start another war
And you must pay your day to day, just to be told what it’s for
They dazzle your eyes to get inside your head
Why do you look for the living among the dead?

Why do you look for the living in the houses of the dead?
Be not of fear, be of light, lift your head
The son of man must be delivered to the hands of sinful men,
Be crucified and on the third day, be raised again

A thin man in a dusty hat walks in with the heat
He offers you a story for something to eat
You’re bored and you got extra food
You figure, what the hell?
You cook him up some breakfast and he proceeds to tell
The tale of a carpenter who wanders through the land
Pays the poor, drives demons out, takes lepers by the hand
Casts merchants from the temple, feeds the children bread
Why do you look for the living among the dead?

Why do you look for the living in the houses of the dead?
Be not of fear, be of light, lift your head
The son of man must be delivered to the hands of sinful men,
Be crucified and on the third day, be raised again
